I can’t introduce our next staff member without getting a little spicy – she has devastated everyone’s dreams of Mario Kart glory with her driving. Meet our Junior Graphic Designer and reigning champ wheel-woman, Marcella.
What do you do in your role as Junior Designer?
In a nutshell, I make things look good! Half the work is being creative, playing with designs, colours and shapes; the other half is working out how to get all the information onto one page.
What has been your career path leading up to this role?
My career path feels like it’s just beginning. I just graduated uni, where I spent 4 years studying Visual Communication in Design. I spent one and a half of those years working part-time as a Junior Designer in a book publishing house, as well as freelancing a bit when I had the time. Synapsis is my first full-time job, which is very exciting.
How did you get into design?
I’ve always loved art and illustration since I was young, and when it came to choosing a degree for uni, I felt that design was close enough whilst still being in a more in-demand field. I don’t even think I really started to enjoy it until I was halfway through my course! Now, of course, I don’t know how I lived without it.
What sort of projects do you most enjoy working on?
Anything with a good story or concept is always my favourite kind of project. The more creative freedom I have, the better. I also have a soft spot for anything with illustration and bright colours.
What are your best sources of inspiration?
I try to keep up-to-date with trends on Twitter and Instagram, and make sure to take pictures of anything interesting I come across! I also update Pinterest boards to keep all my references in one spot.
What special skills and expertise do you bring to your role?
I do have a strong print background from my days in book publishing, which is useful for anything print-related we do. Since I’m just out of uni, I’m also more up-to-date with programs and trends in the design world.
What do you enjoy most about your role at Synapsis Creative?
I love the diversity of projects we get on the desk every day, not just in content but medium as well. It’s definitely cool to dabble in print, presentations, and animations all in the same job!
How do you enjoy spending your free time?
I love reading both books and webtoons, as well as drawing when I have the time! If my brother is home, we play video games together too (I haven’t been here long, but I’m already reigning champion in our office for Mario Kart). I also currently practice a Brazilian martial art called Capoeira, which is really fun and is my only form of exercise.
